Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. ~John Ruskin

Why is it Isaac's Storm?

You are now past the halfway point in our book, Isaac's Storm.  The author has been very clear about how American meteorologists discounted the hard-won knowledge of the Cubans, the mismanagement and mischief that went on in the early Weather Service, and how all signs and information pointed towards a hurricane of great strength barreling towards Galveston, TX.

The author has been somewhat less clear on why he calls the great Galveston hurricane "Isaac's Storm."  Explain, in a well-written and thoroughly proofread paragraph, why you think the author gave 'ownership' of this historic hurricane to Isaac Cline.

  1. Well I believe that since throughout the book it’s been about Isaac knowing all about the past storms and people who were meteorologist’s so this built his knowledge more than others. He knew a lot of ideas and solutions too many problems when it came to weather. But knowing all this information, does not necessarily help to predict the huge storm. Isaac a meteorologist in the Weather service learned how to calculate storms, the way meteorologist’s did before him. So I think that the author, Erik Larson, gave 'ownership' of this historic hurricane to Isaac Cline because the fact that at that time Isaac was the person everybody depended on for the weather, storm prediction. So Isaac tries to calculate the storm but goes through some trouble by miscalculating the storm which happened later in the book.

  2. The author calls the great Galveston hurricane "Isaac's Storm” because to my perspective Isaac is the main character in the book and also the name is “Isaac’s Storm.” In the weather service station Isaac is the only one who knows or have most of the knowledge about how weather works like or what to predict. He knew the solutions to most of the storms but if there is a really huge storm then he was kind of stuck which happened very rarely so far in the book. Since knowing that much stuff or having that much knowledge about the weather, Isaac Cline earned the ownership of this historic hurricane.

  3. I believe Erik Larson named the book Isaac’s Storm because Isaac was the main character of the whole book. It was his experience of the hurricane and his point of view that we are sharing with him. We hear about other famous people and other characters but we hear about them from Isaac’s point of view and how they affect his life. Isaac was a meteorologist so he could understand the storm a lot better than many other people and so was able to tell his story not only from a citizen’s point of view but also that of an experienced meteorologist. It is also extremely important to here the story from Isaac’s point of view because otherwise we would only hear vague and unimportant details that others would give. We would miss some important scientific points that people who were inexperienced and didn’t know these things would miss and without knowing them we could not fully understand how serious the hurricane was and the affects it had on Galveston.

  4. The author of Isaac's Storm , Eric Larson, gave ownership of the hurricane to Isaac Cline because of many reasons, but I believe that the reason he gave him ownership of the hurricane because of his responsibility at the weather center. Isaac went through a lot of troubles and was pretty much the backbone of the weather center. I feel like Isaac did not get much credit at the weather center especially when he was cleaning up other unintersested employee's fabricated preditions. Isaac also was the one to predict the hurricane although there was not much atention payed to his predictions, which explains the damage that was made to Galeveston. I strongly believe that Eric Larson chose Isaac to take ownership of the storm because of his stong impact on the weather center and the prediction of the storm

  5. The book we are currently reading is "Isaacs Storm" written by, Erick Larson. The book is about a terrible hurricane that had almost completely whipped the city of Galveston, Texas off the face if the earth. I believe that the name of the book as given its title, not only, because Isaac Monroe Cline was one if the meteorologist that forecast the storm in Galveston he was also was one of the most respectable forecasters that the Weather Bureau and Galveston had. He was not greatly credited for the things he did, and in my opinion, this was Erick Larson's way of paying homage to such a great man.

  6. Eric Larson, the author of “Isaac Storm” gave credit to Isaac Cline, because Isaac was the reason behind Galveston taking on so much destruction. “How”? It was by his opinion, and as we know opinions rarely, in certain cases makes a difference in lives in the surrounding area. Well it was Isaac’s opinion that made a difference in this certain situation. Cline stopped the building of the seawall which was a big mistake when the hurricane hit. He thought just like we did when they said we were going to get hit by hurricane Sandy, “oh it won’t be anything, nothing but rain.” One thing that we need to learn is to take precaution when not just a weather disaster, but when anything dangerous comes our way.

  7. I believe that Erik Larson gave “ownership” of the historic storm ti Isaac Cline because Isaac was the head man and was the main man taking the weather in Galveston, TX. He kept constant watch and recorded the atmospheric pressure, temperature, and wind speed. Furthermore, he reported his weather findings and recordings to The National Weather Bureau himself to ahow that he was the main meteorologist in Galveston recording and witnessing the storm. In Addition, he is the main character of the book and his story of the storm from before to the aftermath.

  8. Eric Larson gave ownership of the historic event to Isaac Cline because in the novel, Isaac is the main person in contact with the storm. He was the first to have suspicions about the Hurricane and its evident in the novel when he noticed how the ocean hit the beach.Isaac knew a storm was coming but some what doubted himself and believed that it was unlikely to happen. Eric Larson is correct in giving ownership to Isaac because of his hard study of the storm even though he didn't really believe in it, and his persistence to try and understand what was happening and how Galveston could be affected.

  9. Eric Larson gave ownership to Isaac cline because of few reasons, Isaac was the main character in the book, he was updated with everything, he did almost everything by himself. He is the main person and the first person to come in contact with storms.

  11. I believe that the author from "Isaac Storm" gave ownership to Isaac Cline, because all of the work that he has put on to tell Galveston about the weather. He could tell you what type of weather Galveston was going to have , it dont matter if it was a hurricane , tornado or storms he will know. That make him a reflection of the time in which he lived.

  12. He is the main character of the book. All the people in Galveston depending on him for the weather even. He really deserves the credit that the author is giving him by naming the book "Isaac Storm".

  14. The book, Issac Storm is all about weather, how stuff is handle, and predicated beforehand. Throughout the novel. Erik Larson shows ownership to Issac Cline of the hurricane. Issac has been predicating when storms are about to happen. Also, he has been correcting forecasts throughout the time. Many of his predications were right. Even with the limited technology he had back then, he did a great job of analyzing and studying previous storms. He was a huge help for his people of Galveston, he saved many lives with his weather forecast, luckily, he was right about it. Giving that he was correct about majority of forecasts just showed that he should be able to own a hurricane with all the great accomplishments he had. The tremendous attitude of finding out and wanting to learn more and more. It gave the author, Erik Larson, to give Issac ownership of the hurricane.

  15. The author gave the storm name Isaac because Isaac was an important person in that time . The author saw the hurricane as Isaac. Isaac in the time ruled with an iron fist. And command with power and knowledge. This is what I think the author gave him ownership of the hurricane.

  16. I believe Erick Larson named the book "Isaac's Storm " because Isaac knew a lot of the things that were going on before the storm. Isaac was a very special meteorologist, he could expand on a lot of his findings. He could tell when something was not right. He also could tell the wind speeds if they were normal or not normal. Isaac cleaned the meteorologist center up, he kicked out a lot of the wrong people and enhanced the meteorologist center. Isaac predicted the hurricane before anybody else did. Erick Larson gives ownership to Isaac on the hurricane because Isacc knew about it before anybody else , it was Isaac fault in my opinion because he didn't get the word out quicker and didn't push people on believing him. Everybody depend on Isaac weather forecast and predictions.

  17. The author gave credit to issac cline because he was basically the head man in charge. He was the one who was first suspicious of the storm and recorded the weather and temperatures. He also was the weatherman for Galveston TX. It was only right to credit him for his work.

  18. Personally, I feel that the author named this hurricane "Isaac's Storm" due to the fact that Isaac Cline was the expert meteorologist of his time. I remember in an earlier passage that Isaac discovered interest in meteorology while predicting a hailstone at a nearby lake. Even though his predictions and research was correct, several people told him that his report was ignorant and foolish. Ever since that day, he has been dedicated to continue predicting weather accurately and to prove wrong those who disrespected him. I feel that during the next half of the book, we will see Isaac predict this destructive hurricane, but many citizens will not believe him. When this storm comes, they will all see that Isaac was right all along, and that their ignorance will cost them their lives.

  19. I believe that the book is called "isaac's storm" because, Isaac was the leading discoverer of the storm in the book. Isaac gained the most information on the happenings at Galveston. He was the first to Analyze the storm and break down its characteristics. He saw the storm change and show distinctive feature not ever seen in previous storms. Isaac's observation will help further develop the weather predicting system as a whole.

  20. Erik Larson, the author of the book "Isaac's Storm," has spoken about the early weather service and how Cuba was always better at predicting weather. Isaac Cline, the man who Larson tells the story around, was the lead meteorologist at the time. The author calls this book "Isaac's Storm" because due to poor judgement and the vanity of the Isaac and many of the people at this time, he was unable to predict the hurricane that destroyed the town of Galveston, Texas. Isaac was the resident meteorologist for the U.S weather bureau and he couldn't tell what the weather conditions would cause such a massive hurricane. However, Isaac was one of the people that could tell there was something wrong.
