Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather. ~John Ruskin

Weather Forecasting

We start class each day with a map analysis and try to forecast the day's weather.  Now, with computers, we are able to be much more accurate than even 50 years ago.  Why do you think, then, that forecasting the weather can still be very difficult to do?

  1. Weather can change rapidly and often, so meteorologists speak about the chance of rain or sunlight in percentages. They can never be certainly sure of future weather events. So being absolutely right is very hard to come by which make meteorologists job a lot harder. so we cant get on them because there so many variables missing to get any accurate.

  2. While the advances meteorologists have made- when it comes to predicting the weather-have been huge, Mother Nature and weather are still somewhat enigmatic. While we can make almost certain predictions about what the weather will be, we still can never be too sure. Weather is just too unpredictable. If a meteorologist says that there is a 98% chance of rain on a given day, most people would be regretful if they did not bring an umbrella with them outside. However there is a 2% chance that it would not rain, and sometimes that 2% chance of no rain is exactly what we get. When it comes down to it, predicting the weather even a day in advance, has quite a few variables to consider. This means that the prediction made will not always be the outcome. I don’t think that humans can ever accurately predict the weather, because weather is unpredictable.

  3. I believe the biggest reason forecasting weather is hard even though meteorologist are trained to do it is how fast weather can change. Weather while being predictable can also be very unpredictable (example, rain being predicted to fall on one spot but then wind changes directions and pushing rain to fall on a place it wasn't supposed to fall in). It can also be very hard to gather all the right pieces of information at the right time, and a small piece of missing data can cause just as big of a problem.

  4. To this day forecasting can be very difficult because the weather is like trying to predict a game before they play. Nobody never really knows what's exactly going to be happen it the game is over. The same thing for forecasters, however they have electronics that would give them a very close prediction of weather. In my opinion predicting and forecasting is an extremely hard job because you may never know the exact result of the weather. Weather will never be 100% accurate.

  5. I believe because in order to predict the weather that is going on ground it is very difficult to do because these predictions on the forecast comes from the atmosphere. There is around 5 billion cubic kilometers of air in the troposphere and in order to get a very accurate forecast prediction one must also cover every inch of the space of air in the troposphere from the area in which one wants to gather the information from. To do that i think the predicted weather would have passed by then. Also there are many variables missing from their data making it much harder to pin point an accurate weather. That is why most predictions are done in percentages to not 100% incorrect in their prediction. Also weather may change at random times making it tedious to predict if it is changing at a constant and rapid state. This is why forecasting weather is more difficult than it seems.

  6. Meteorologists pull their information from various places. Their predictions are usually a combination of what their co-workers in the field are seeing, results of super computers, weather patterns and what they already know. This information comes into Weather Prediction offices at an unbelievable rate, from numerous places. The incoming notes change as the weather changes. Meteorologists are forced to constantly adjust the "contours of temperature gradients". Because there is no way to determine exactly what our environment is going to do at what time, you may never know what is going to happen in terms of weather, until it happens.

  7. Even with our technological advancements, the world of science is reminded often that nature's ferocity and ambiguity cause it to be in a small sense unpredictable. This being said, the difficulty of predicting weather could simply be because it's nearly impossible to calculate for every variable that affects weather patterns and conditions.
Another thing that i think makes weather predictions difficult in this "post-modern" society is that there are limits. There are limits to how far up in the atmosphere we can see, how deep into the earth, how far ahead in time (days), etc. Because of this hinderance, Making accurate weather predictions is a big challenge. There are alot of things that are incorperated into weather patterns that we as humans just don't know. And we won't know these secrets (if we ever do) until we advance even more.

  8. I belive that forecasting can still be very difficult to do because the weather can be very unpredictable. It can be fickle or precise. Mother nature tends to be very capricious and it takes effect on our predictions about the the weather. Meteorologist with the best equipment would still have to assume that they are right with their forecasting.

  10. Even with all the technology we have today it is impossible to be correct about the weather all the time. This is because we cannot control mother nature and since the weather is always changing it is literally impossible to get the weather forecast correct all of the time. This is why it is so difficult for a weather man or woman do not always give your the correct weather because weather is always changing and they can only give you the prediction that comes from the technology we have.

  11. Today, even with advanced technology to predict the weather, forecasting is still not very accurate. Today we use Dopper radars to locate storms and what not but in reality most storms are very dynamic and they tend to change. With that being said, I think anyone now-a-days can be a weather forecaster with so much technology there's no need to get a degree in meteorology.

  12. Over the past 50 years, the technology we use to gather information to predict our weather has advanced. But, as we know, the weather is a force of nature. Meaning that it is out of the control of human beings. Therefore, on any given day the weather can change from what we thought it may be. And it is for that reason why it is still very diffictult for forecasters to predict the weather today.

  13. In todays world even with the technology we have it is still hard to predict, or to have an accurate forcast on weather. I think this has to do with mother nature and that the weather could change at any moment of time.Even with technology it is imposible for forcasters to be a 100% sure. And with the smallest change in weather it can throgh off all of your prediction that your have projected.

  14. Although we have advanced computers that allow is to accuratley predict the weather. There are still events happening within our atmosphere that we have no explanation for. Also our technology is limited to due to its computing power, and the sibngle values for Temperature and Pressure from a techincal stand point make there a margin for error. Altogether there are to many variables out of our hands to be 100% sure.

  15. In my opinion even as technology advances we will never be able to predict the weather becuase the weather is unstable. Weather can change at any given moment. Most weatherman constantly predict what they assume the weather will be like for the day but as we all no weather is completely unpredictable. No matter how advanced we become with technology I think the weatherman will never be able to get an accurate prediction on the weather.

  16. In my opinion it all comes down to the fact that there are so many things that can happen where the outcome is this kind of weather or that kind and we do not yet have the technology to send a person to explore the atmosphere in it's entirety so anyone can make a near perfect or truly accurate prediction.

  17. I think predicting the weather can still be very difficult because of all of the variables that can change the possible outcome of the weather. For example wind speed, and direction can change at any time. Weather can also change due to the amount of humidity. There are a lot of things in the atmosphere that we cannot control and cannot predict. I believe weather is going to be another thing that man will never fully understand.

  18. I Think the reason why we have not been able to forecast weather with 100% confidence is because all of the variables at play at one time. If the meteorologists giving the forecaster the data miss a variable, or one changes a short while after they record it, then that can throw off a forecast completely. So the chances of getting it right every time are very unlikely, even with the technology advancements we have made over the last 50 years.

  19. Technology has come a long way from the past. unfortunately its still not advance enough to give a precise answer for today's weather forecast. Meteorologist are limited to a small fraction of information. They scramble and go over countless predictions to come close to a accurate prediction. most times they're close to accurate other times they're wrong.
